The system
What is numerology?
Numerology is a symbolic system, not a science. It assigns meaning to numbers, and it reads the numbers derived from your birth date and name as descriptions of character, tendencies, and timing. Western numerology follows the system associated with Pythagoras, though the practice as it exists today is a modern synthesis of older traditions.
Two ideas do most of the work. The first is reduction: any number can be folded down to a single digit between 1 and 9. The second is correspondence: each digit is read as its own character or theme. The mechanics
How numerology works
Most numerology calculations are repeated digit reduction. Take the birth date August 24, 1990. The month is already a single digit: 8. The day reduces to 2 + 4 = 6. The year runs 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. Adding those results gives 8 + 6 + 1 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. In numerology, that person’s life path number is 6.
Master numbers: 11, 22, and 33
There is one exception to all that reducing. When a step produces 11, 22, or 33, many numerologists stop and read the number whole, treating it as an intensified version of its single-digit root. Birth dates are only half the chart.
